The Mountain ridges on the Sprengisandur road
The Sprengisandur road will take you by four striking mountain ridges, alda in Icelandic: Þveralda (Thveralda), at 728 m in height, affords an excellent view, with Lake Þverölduvatn to the northeast. Next to the north is Hnöttóttaalda, rising to 785 m. From the Svartá River to the north there are several shallow fords over small rivers. The road proceeds to Hnausaver, with special tundra pools, and then Skrokkalda, higher still at 922 m. There’s a rather easy path up Skrokkalda and at the top the climber is rewarded with a stunning view in all directions. The most northern ridge is Kistualda, 786 m, with a rocky cliff at the top. Nýjadalur Valley stretches north of the ridges with fords over the glacial rivers to the north.
