The Highland Center is situated at the edge of Iceland's most impressive and active volcanic area — the last stop before entering the vast and untouched interior of Iceland. We aim to offer a "complete" Highland experience from the moment you arrive, with two properties to choose from: Hótel Hrauneyjar and Hótel Háland, located just 1.5 km apart.
 
Hótel Hrauneyjar is our main property, home to the restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as the sauna available to all guests. Hótel Háland offers a step up in comfort for guests wanting a bit more space and quiet — breakfast is served on-site there, while lunch and dinner are enjoyed at Hótel Hrauneyjar. Check-in for both properties takes place at Hótel Hrauneyjar.
 
The Highland Center is close to many of the most beautiful and popular tourist attractions in the highlands — including Landmannalaugar, Þjórsárdalur, Mount Hekla, Sprengisandur, Veiðivötn, and Fjallabak. The vastness and lack of human impact on the surrounding area make it truly one of the last places in Europe where freedom, natural beauty, and solitude combine into a breathtakingly powerful experience.

The Highland Center is accessible by paved road all year round. From Reykjavík the trip takes approximately 2.5 hours, covering 156 km to Hótel Hrauneyjar (Hótel Háland is a further 1.5 km along the same road). If arriving by rental car, guests must verify that the vehicle is insured for Iceland's mountain F roads, especially when driving in the highlands.
 
Check-in for both Hótel Hrauneyjar and Hótel Háland takes place at Hótel Hrauneyjar — guests staying at Hótel Háland will be directed there after checking in.

How to get here

Take route 1 east from Reykjavík. Pass through the town of Selfoss; approximately 15 km past Selfoss, turn left onto route 30. Remain on route 30 for approximately 17 km, then turn right onto route 32. Remain on route 32 and continue onto route F26. Hótel Hrauneyjar will be on the right-hand side. Guests continuing on to Hótel Háland should check in first, then continue a further 1.5 km along F26.

Mountain Lodge at Hólaskógur offers sleeping-bag accommodation for up to 44 guests in a quiet highland setting. A place of simple comforts, the lodge spans two levels with multi-person rooms and bunk beds, along with shared kitchens and bathrooms with showers, making it especially well suited to group stays. It’s a practical, welcoming base for exploring the surrounding nature.
